Using Gartic.io to Teach English

What’s Gartic.io?

To put it simply, Gartic.io is an online multiplayer browser game where one player draws and others guess the drawing. Everyone will have their turn to draw and make guesses. It's simple, yet fun.

Just so you know, this game can be played on a mobile phone or PC.

There are a lot of categories to play and the point and ranking system make it more competitive.

How Can Gartic.io Help Us in Teaching English?

People may just see Gartic.io as just a game, but if we look deeper, it has some potential to help us teach English. The questions are… What and How?

Well, let’s see in the area of spelling and vocabulary. Basically, in order to draw the correct picture, students need to know about the word given to them. The same also goes with other students if they want to guess the picture being drawn. That’s for the vocabulary. Spelling? To get the correct answer, students must write the word correctly.

In the game, when a student is drawing something, other students can discuss it in the chat. We can direct the students to use English to communicate so they can improve their writing.

What about speaking? For speaking, we need an app like a voice calling or teleconferencing app. For doing this, I personally use Zoom. By using an app like Zoom, students can communicate orally instead of just chatting. They can interact with one another like asking for or giving clues. This is a fun way to put their speaking into practice!

And of course, the way above is for online classes. You don’t need an app like Zoom in the classroom.
